So many times over the years I’ve watched the Humber Bridge fade away in the rear view mirror and yet today, as the darkness rolled in, the Bridge became clearer. The gateway to my hometown, welcoming me, reminding me of why I’m here.

I’ve been to many vigils in my 55 years. They’re a time to contemplate, reflect and maybe think about possibilities.

My experience was I’m sure very similar with others in that, it felt at times almost unquantifiable.

I saw someone watching me so I watched them. Most of the other people I saw did not look up at all. I also saw a lot of clouds of many different shapes and formations. So that was good. Red sky at night is shepherd’s delight.

I was initially surprised how ‘beautiful’ the pod actually was. The view over the city is incredible. I worked for over 20 years at the Old Queens Gardens police station so lots of memories here.

Stillness. A passive participation. Taking in the view that Wilberforce sees daily. Thinking about the past and looking towards the future. The ferry coming in to port. Taking and embracing the moment that the VIGIL has given me. LOVE HULL.

Standing towards the east I was pleased how far I could see. The furthest buildings were the three flats on Valiant Drive, Bilton Grange Estate. Those linked me to my Grandfather who was a trawlerman.

At 7.30pm tomorrow (Monday 3 May) a 365-day Vigil will begin in Hull as the sun sets and a Vigil keeps a silent watch over the city from inside a glass and wooden shelter located on the rooftop of Hull College.

Hull Esteem and its partners have joined forces with Freedom Festival to bring The Hull Vigil to life through generous donations of time, expertise and resources.

The Munich Vigil began at sunset on 12 December 2020. This performance will run until 12 December 2021, so will overlap with The Hull Vigil connecting the two cities through a shared international experience.

At 10am on 1 March 2021, we opened the bookings for The Hull Vigil and in seven hours and seven minutes all of the 730 places had been reserved.
