Sunrise 23 April - Dominique Esnault
Above the cityscape and amazingly a feeling of being part of nature! The sky, the sun, (½) a moon, the wind and the birds, so many of them – what a privilege . . . alone but part of it all!

You won’t find the answer sitting in a box . . . but it was breathtaking to see my city from above.

Watching the city wake up as the sun rose was an eerie sense of calm you’d only experience with a project such as this.

Every time you moved position you saw something different. It made me appreciate how little of the city I really recognised.

Heavy boats glide across the Humber in the east and make their way from the twinkling port out across the expanse.

Watching the day turn to night!
So many different thoughts and emotions in an hour that past so quickly.
04/05/22
To be so high up you get a different perspective of the city, the buildings and park are so special. A ferry came up the Humber out of the mist and to the west the Humber Bridge just in view.

An auspicious date – reclaimed with joy, a privileged place – sentinel spirits, fleetingly communed. The sunset an embrace for all.

Saw my workplace, Reckitt’s. Seems so long ago since retirement. Looking out the other side feels like Sunday morning. Other than that, it was good to see. So many places brought back lovely memory of my life in Hull.

I was amazed by the gradual cooling when the sun went down. You could almost feel the darkness and night coming.
04/05/22
It was really breathtaking to watch and it’s bizarre how it happens every morning yet so rarely viewed when it is so magical. Definitely worth the wait and the early morning start.

Lovely, quiet time watching (the quiet) world go by. I spent more time looking to the east even though I work and live in the west, perhaps that’s why.
03/05/22
That was a truly transcendental experience. It was the most beautiful sky as I stepped in, pink and orange. Then the sun slowly lit it up to make the most beautiful cocktail of colours!!
03/05/22
I noticed a homeless person setting up their makeshift bed for the night. Struggling in the wind. He caught me looking, gave me a wave.

How many things go unnoticed because we are rushing around thinking of past and future, rather than now?
03/05/22
Good Friday is traditionally dark. This one wasn’t. In fact there was a glorious sunset with a golden orb finally dipping below the cloud bank. Whilst in the East a full Easter show.
03/05/22
Also seeing the city start to come to life as the day began, watching people knowing they most probably don’t know you’re there.

The first thing that struck me as I entered the vigil was the noise. The bustle of people, cars and birds heading on their journey home. And then I realised I was not alone . . . a small insect was looking for a way to escape, a route out to the sun.
03/05/22
The city is noisy; my mind, as it turns out, is quiet. I am surprised at how quick the sunrise was. Then I wonder at how long it then takes to arc to sunset.

Twenty years ago I moved away from Hull. Five years ago I was pulled back to a city that is often misunderstood or looked down upon. A city I’m proud to call home.
