Sunset 13 January - Fatema Aljafari
Everything looking very beautiful, birds flying, the weather was great sunny. When I looked at the bridge I was really blown away.

This was helped by the gorgeous sunrise visible over the water but I think also because it seemed more authentic, grassroots Hull, not just the bits they stick on the Welcome signs.

When sunset came it came quickly. The shadows changed and lights came on. Boats on the Humber and wind turbine spinning in the distance. The tide was coming in and the traffic was moving freely.

It has been a gift to be the Bishop of Hull these seven years, to be part of keeping watch over the city and holding it in the gaze of love. The blessing of God.

Thank you dad and grandad for sharing your love of this place. They would have loved this. I will pass this on to my grandson born today 11th January 2022.

And it was truly unforgettable. On my birthday, and at an often difficult time of year for me, thank you for the special gift of a moment’s peace, perched high above the city I love so dearly.

Time appearing to move both quickly and slowly. Some experiences already forgotten. But yet somehow memorable.

Hold on, movement. The sun is popping up and oh what a greeting. Everything is becoming more golden and the surrounding areas purple and blue is now shining through.

How beautiful our City is and yet we seldom think or recognise this! Over the River Humber stretches our famous Humber Bridge, the one sight that locals see and know they are ‘home’.

Sunrise, molten ball, the colours of the sky and cloud: pinks, blue, hints of yellow, orange, shimmering. Not a solid ball, lava, globular, runny edged – a poached egg sun.

I see the sun – a tiny bean of hot rose pink nosing through the clouds to say goodnight leaving us with a delicate rose sky. I’m watching you, sun. I’m watching you Hull. We’re here, we ain’t going anywhere.

The city slowly awakes with the only sound the seagulls. What a fantastic, amazing experience to see another day begin in the beautiful city we live in.
21/01/22
The sky changes as the sunset painted East Hull pink – orange in the West. I was surprised at how mesmerised by the seabirds overhead – floating, soaring.

I so enjoyed standing as tall as William Wilberforce and gazing over the city while watching the dark, heavy clouds blow away and the sun giving light to the city of Hull.

A cold, wet day above the city,
This chance to gaze on daily life.
I stand on high as they move around.

The sun also lit up the inside of the vigil shelter. It made the wooden walls glow a lovely colour – reminding me of lots of different things – caramel, fudge and golden toast.

Really enjoyed this, loved the sunset, Tony was great, thank you.

The sunrise was perfect, beautiful and very bright after the first couple of minutes. I then turned my attention to the ripples on the Humber.

It was strange to see all the streets I grew up in from a different light. Tracing streets I have walked down many times but noticing small details that would never have stood out to me before.
21/01/22
The sounds of the city, the traffic was something I was particularly aware of. The patterns of the streets, the layers of time, the way time changed and expanded as I went through the experience.
