Sunset 17 July 2021 - PAUL RENNISON
My 73rd birthday.
An unforgettable experience!
My overwhelming feeling was of sadness at the lack of shipping on the Humber; saw only one vessel – Pride of Hull (Rotterdam).

What an incredible experience!!
I was incredibly lucky to have a cloud-free, glorious morning which meant the rise of the sun was just belting.

This experience really made me think about the role the city plays in our lives, from the buildings and infrastructure to the green spaces and cultural venues. It made me think how amazing it is that all of this exists to serve people’s wants and needs.

It was much more than what I expected. The sunrise was incredibly beautiful – starting with the smallest sliver of orange. Bathing the city inch by inch in orange light as it emerged over the horizon.

What a fabulous experience! Very clear, beautiful evening. Loved every minute of it! Had a band playing in Queens Gardens for part of my experience which was lovely and had the most amazing sunset for my final part of it!

What a privilege to see such a huge fiery sun rise above the horizon in its full glory. I was emotional and felt so blessed. I ushered the day with a sun salutation, welcoming the warmth and depth of colour. St Swithin’s Day today but looks like no rain will drop.

. . . And so, step by step the sun just slid behind the hills. It was a most unique and rewarding experience spending time just looking, watching and reflecting. Ironically, it was nature that grabbed me as much as anything.

On entering the ‘Hut’ I could see the clouds sadly moving through the sky. I would be unable to see the sun this morning. As I watched the sky the patterns on the clouds changed; some dark, others blue and tinged with the red glow of the Sun fighting to escape the cloud cover.

Funnily enough, the first thing I noticed was a working clock on one of the buildings behind the college! I did, however, serenely watch the ferry go out and disappear over the horizon.

What a privilege to have had that experience.
A city of two halves and even though I’m a West Hull girl – I was drawn to the East.

I remained silent for my vigil. The peace and silent noise was something my busy head needed. It was nice to take that moment of reflection in my life.

Watching and listening to the city through the mist, come slowly to life. I noticed parts of the city I’ve never noticed before – areas of wasteland, docks now disused, paths that cut through areas, parts of buildings never seen before.

Seeing the City on a football match night added something extra, from the near constant crowd noise to the occasional roar and car horns.
13/08/21
Looking west, the city looks like a forest. It’s surprising how very green it is.
13/08/21
I loved the way the city changed colours from being bright and vibrant to soft pastel colours to cold, dark, shadowy, faded colours as the sun set.
13/08/21
The city was hiding from me this morning, shrouded in fog.

From the moment I entered the box until the second I left – I smiled!

A perfect sunrise,
A ball of fire emerged from the horizon,
Beautifully illuminating this new day.

Extraordinary. Imagine if that was your job to stand watch over the city till somebody told you to stop. It’s like a task of a deity.

I really enjoyed the first part of the experience; walking to the box and acclimatizing to the height. It’s quite a view at first.
