Wow! A wonderful sunny evening looking over Hull. A great experience and a privilege to take part. Had time to think and reflect. I was born in Hull in 1960 but lost my Dad (George Robert Taylor) on this day in 1972.

What a wonderful experience. So calm and serene. It was lovely to watch the ferry slowly docking and to witness the city waking up. Such a fantastic view of a city I thought I knew so well!

A private sunset. A view of Hull I’d never had before. I was higher than the screeching gulls. It was wonderful to be able to pick out places I knew and intriguing to try to figure out what others were. Being able to enjoy the Kraken on the Maritime Museum was an added bonus.

Wow! An amazing, unique, peaceful, calming experience. So entrancing to see the sun rise over a city I now call my home. I thought my mind would wander to my busy life, but it didn’t – it stayed in the now.

So much to see and muse over. I felt excited, tired, grateful, a voyeur, at peace, distracted, like a city invigilator and tree keeper.
Strange sense of time quickening and slowing, the vista familiar yet newly revealing shapes lights and movement – East and West.

I found myself, somewhat unexpectedly, in the shelter this morning. No blazing sunrises like before but a steady calm of a city waking.
The noise was most noticeable, the seagulls almost deafening at times as they cried for attention.

Lost for words (first time in my life). Beautiful. I became entranced by the colours of the sun setting. I felt as if I was the only person in Hull.
Wouldn’t never have believed how beautiful it was until I experienced it myself. So overpowering

Such peace! Me, the sky and the seagulls with the whole of Hull laid out beneath us like a puzzle. The moment the very first tip of the sun appears is breath-taking.
A wondrous light this morning which I feel very lucky to have witnessed.

The glorious 12th! And it was glorious. The view takes your breath away. I am so proud of Hull – I have lived here all my life.
I have seen the sunset on holidays all over the world.

The first thing that came into my head as the Vigil started was how much daylight we waste. The gulls were already awake, their cries almost the only sound since most humans were still asleep. Yet already there was plenty of light. A resource we hoard desperately in winter, in summer we’re happy to squander it on sleep.

When you are in a box with only two windows for an hour, it gives you a proper chance to reflect, imagine, observe and just be at one with yourself whilst looking at people.
I recently lost my darling husband, Gavin, to a long battle with two types of cancer. So my emotions were, and still are, quite raw.

Before I came I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was a truly peaceful hour of reflection and seeing the city in, literally, a whole new light.
I was lucky enough to experience a few minutes of the most striking blood orange sun, followed by brilliant white illuminating the city

My vigil was much more than I expected it to be. To be able to be still and simply take in my surroundings without the distraction of everyday life was refreshing and emotional.
Having the opportunity to ‘watch over’ the City I call home was a wonderful experience.

To watch the sun begin to appear through a slice in the sky whilst the east of the city seems to awaken faster than the west.
To hear the traffic steadily increase like waves crashing on a shoreline, the bold seagulls playing around the windows picking up pace as they rise and fall, only one to begin with, then three, then five.

It’s not often you get a complete hour by yourself with no screens, and just your own thoughts.
It was such a lovely experience to see Hull from a different view. Having been born here and have spent the last 24 years growing up here, it was an extremely enjoyable thing to do before I finally move away in September.

Wow, what can one really say? Such a privilege/experience, words cannot really describe my experience. The visual photos of a stunning sunrise, rising above the City and beyond the buildings – all different sizes, shapes, just like us.

Well what a wonderful experience that was. I could have stayed out there all night.
The clouds were wonderful, the sky was wonderful, the colours were wonderful. At one point I was singing and looking up and I felt like I was ascended into heaven.

I think the place is so nice. I can see Hull too.
I see a boat on the Humber, and the wind turbines. I’ve enjoyed myself.

What a great way to end my birthday! It was a privilege to be able to watch over my adopted city as the sun went down. Fabulous cloud formations which unfortunately covered the sun actually setting. However, the sun’s rays gave the clouds to the east a beautiful colouring.
