Experiencing the city from above is an opportunity you don’t get to do often, particularly when you’re left alone to observe the sunset. This is something I will never forget. Watching the drizzle come down and the city lights begin to sparkle reminded me of one of the things I love most about this country; the rain – well, drizzle.

I saw the sun come up over the horizon like a red balloon slowly emerging. Then gradually becoming yellow and lighter until I couldn’t look at it any more. An amazing experience. I watched seagulls flying at my height and small flocks of birds landing on Queen’s Gardens.

So strange to see the world going about its business in the usual hustle and bustle below whilst observing it in complete solitude and silence above fantastic views of a still busy Queen’s Gardens whilst to the east a ferry sets sail to Rotterdam.

It would have been easy to sit back and reflect on what the past 18 months has taken away from me (and everyone) but the vigil gave me the opportunity to reflect on just how much life and energy is out there.
A unique and rewarding experience – an hour doesn’t seem that long at all!

Visually.
Thought I was going to be unlucky as I entered the box the heavens opened and visibility fell. But I was lucky enough to see a large rainstorm pass over the city as the visibility cleared and the sun broke through I was treated to one of the most magnificent sunsets I have ever seen. The sun bright, casting an orange glow across the tops of the buildings.

So beautiful seeing Hull awaken. Couldn’t get my bearings to start with as everything looked so different from above, so small, close together.
When the sun started to rise it was so red and really round, the clouds kept playing with me and moving to block the sunrise but it wasn’t frustrating – more intriguing.

At school below me. Gallery probably now a sports hall at the academy. Quay Art in Princes Quay. Modern poky flats and period houses I lived in. St Mary’s where I got married. Big investments at the time but seemingly inconsequential now.

I was a bit fearful going into the Shelter following a close family bereavement the last thing I wanted was to be alone with my thoughts.
But I should not have worried. The sights and sounds of the City grabbed my attention immediately.
